YouTube is adding new features to YouTube Kids, it’s a separate app for kids, to ensure that parents can better control what content their kids see in the app.

The new features will allow parents to lock down the YouTube Kids app so it only displays those channels that have been reviewed by humans, not just algorithms. And this includes both the content displayed within the app itself, as well as the recommended videos. A later update will allow parents to configure which videos and channels, specifically, can be viewed. Another new option is an “improved search- off control”.

Currently, children can use the app’s search function to watch videos, but these videos available through search are not subject to human review, but are selected by a special algorithm trained to return appropriate results, according to YouTube.

For parents who like the current version of YouTube Kids and want a wider selection of content, it’s still available. While no system is perfect, Google continues to fine-tune, rigorously test and improve their filters for this more open version of the app. And, Google also encourages parents to block and flag videos for review that they don’t think should be in the YouTube Kids app. This makes YouTube Kids better for everyone.
